              Jose Mendez was the 1st Negro League player to pitch in the SCL, On 3/21/1911 he tossed an 8 hit CG vs the Peoria Caterpillars. Beating Pete Alexander 4-2. He was an All-Star in 1911, 1912 and a member of 2 NL pennant winners. (1911 Superbas, 1923 Storm.) He was 2nd in the Pitcher of the Year Award in 1911. As of 1928, his 83 career saves was good for 2nd all-time in the SCL.

A Cuban League star, “ El Diamente Negro” “Black Diamond”, was inducted into the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1939. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
