CAREER STATS
Addie Joss was born on April 12, 1880. While pitching in an exhibition game in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on 4/3/1911, he collapsed on the playing field and died 11 days later of Tubercular Meningitis on April 14, 1911. He had just turned 31 years old.
His career spanned just 9 seasons all with the Cleveland Naps/Bronchos. He finished his career, 160-97, with a 1.89 ERA and a Major League best 0.968 WHIP. He pitched 2 no-hitters, which included a Perfect Game on 10/2/1908, a 1-0 victory vs the White Sox, using just 74 pitches, the lowest pitch count in a Perfect Game.
He was inducted into the HOF by the Veteran’s Committee in 1978.
On July 24, 1911 the Naps played an exhibition game against a group of American League players to help raise funds for Joss’s family. This game is labeled as the 1st “All Star” game. It was won by the American League All Stars 5-3, and raised almost $13,000 for Joss’s family.
Addie Joss had a 7-5 W/L record to go along with a 2.24 ERA for the Turks in his lone season in the league. He combined with Hooks Wiltse to toss a Perfect Game against the Rascals(Vinegars), an eerily similar 1-0 score. Joss pitched 8.1 innings of perfection before the DMB simulation decided to throw in a 71 minute rain delay. This caused Joss’s arm to stiffen, removing him from the game, in favor of Wiltse, who then proceeded to get the final 2 outs to preserve the Perfecto.
During the 1910 draft I had targeted Joss, a personal favorite, as my 11th round pick for the Skeeters, but I instead drafted John Flynn. I needed Abs at 1st base, and I liked his 6 Hrs, I thought Joss’s 5-5 record and just 107 IP might allow him to stay unnoticed until my next pick. Philip Wagner had other ideas, and snagged him with the 1st pick of the 12th round. I expressed my disappointment to Philip, via a stern email, a vigorous finger waggle, and a threat to hold my breath until I turned blue. He was not persuaded to change his pick and has earned my eternal enmity.
But, eternal enmity has it’s limits, and based on a suggestion by Philip Wagner, the Second Chance League will be replaying this game in honor of Addie Joss, using the same All Star players from 1911, with the exception of the addition of Pop Lloyd, because it should have happened then, so we get to correct that omission. They will be taking on the Sharples Works Turks, Joss’s former Second Chance League team.
ALL STARS DESTROY TURKS FOR CHARITY
Walter Johnson pitched 1 hit ball for 4 innings, and Turks shoddy fielding led to unearned runs in the 3rd, 6th, and 7th innings, to give the All Stars a not so insurmountable 5-0 lead through 7 innings. Frank HR Baker hit a 2 run HR in the 8th to put the game out of reach, and pitcher Smoky Joe Wood deposited a Grand Slam into the right field stands to cap off the scoring.
