The 20th SCL All-Star Game exceeded all expectations.
Guy Bush (Queen City) started for the NL, William Bell (Rainiers) started for the AL
The game started just like a fight scene in the old Batman TV series. Batman and Robin vs the Penguin's henchman. "BIFF!!" "BAM!!" "BOOM!!"
The AL hit HRs in the 1st 3 innings. Willie Wells (Vipers) in the 1st, Pythias Russ (Miners) in the 2nd, and Babe Ruth (Pines) in the 3rd. This game was over......until the 5th inning happened.
With the AL leading 6-1, the henchman got off the floor and started fighting back. The NL bunched together 5 singles, and Jud Wilson (Gorillas) threw a groundball into right field and the score was tied at 6.
The AL went up by 2 in the 7th. Bill Riggins' (Skeeters) 2-out triple scored Chet Brewer (Vipers), and Dick Lundy (Crimson Tide) threw away an inning-ending grounder, his 2nd error of the game, allowing Riggins to score from 3rd.
8-6 AL.
In the 8th, Biz Mackey (Terrapins) and Dick Lundy singled with one out. An rbi groundout was followed by a 2-out double off the bat of Pop Lloyd (Storm) and we were tied at 8-8.
The 1st extra-inning game in SCL history followed.
It was 3 up and 3 down for both teams in the 10th.
In the top of the 11th, Babe Herman (Caterpillars) walked to start the inning, and Pop Lloyd followed with a single. Pinch hitter Clint Thomas (Spiders) grounded back to the mound, Martin Dihigo (Gorillas) pressed into mound duty, due to a depleted bench, threw to 3rd for the force. Wade Johnston (Terrapins) popped out, and Bullet Joe Rogan (Warbirds) grounded out to end the NL threat.
The AL went down 1/2/3 sending the game to the 12th.
Dewey Creacy (Crimson Tide) singled with 1 out for the NL. 1 out later Dick Lundy reached on an infield hit. Catcher Larry Brown (Rainiers) allowed a passed ball to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Babe Herman (Caterpillars) singled in Creacy and Lundy to put the NL up 10-8. With 2 runners on, relief pitcher Howard Ehmke (Spiders) was forced to bat due to an empty NL bench. He flew out to end the inning.
Ehmke got the 1st two AL batters out in the bottom of the 12th, but Pie Traynor banged a 2-0 pinch into the left field stands to make the score 10-9. Willie Wells (Vipers) singled and then Ehmke walked Chino Smith (Gorillas) and Babe Ruth (Pines) to load the bases. With no relief help available Ehmke would have to pitch to Larry Brown. (Rainiers) Co-Managers Doug and Kevin weighed their options. Pinch hit the last remaining bat on the AL bench, Al Simmons (Skeeters), and his .365 average, and leave the AL without a catcher, or bat Larry Brown and his .284 average. Since Doug is from Las Vegas, and I'm from the mean streets of Scranton, we went for broke and batted Simmons. Simmons lined a 1-0 pitch into CF for the game-winning single.
AL 11 NL 10 (12)
This was the 1st extra inning All-Star game. There were 4 HRs hit, the most in any SCL All-Star game, and Dick Lundy became the 1st player with 5 hits in an All-Star game.
A tough MVP choice, but because Al Simmons (Skeeters) came through in a clutch do or die situation, he gets the nod.
