The Second Chance League’s 7th All Star game was played at the Baker Bowl, home of the NL ArkLaTex Robins.
Reb Russell(Skeeters) started for the AL, and Pete Alexander(Caterpillars) started for the NL.
Both Russell and Alexander did their thing. Russell tossed 2 scoreless innings while Alexander tossed 3 scoreless innings. Both pitchers allowed just 1 hit.
Jim Jeffries(Stogies) and Walter Johnson(Warbirds) followed that up with 2 scoreless innings each, without allowing a hit.
In the top of the 6th with Dick Whitworth(Robins) on the mound, Honus Wagner(Miners) walked with 1 out. Babe Ruth(Pines) pinch Hitting for the pitcher singled to put runners on the corners. Hal Chase(Stogies) singled in Wagner. With Ruth on 3rd, and just 1 out, Cristobal Torriente(Stogies) grounded hard to 1st, but Ruth was gunned down by 5 feet at home plate.
In the last of the 6th Ruth walked 2 batters, but Eddie Collins(Tornados) flew out to end the inning.
In the top of the 7th, Joe Jackson(Rebels) led off with a triple to deep center. A Doc Wiley(Skeeters) sac fly scored Jackson giving the AL a 2-0 lead.
Ruth came out for the bottom of the 7th pitching to an NL squad that had just 1 hit, a leadoff single by Pop Lloyd(Blue Meanies) in the 1st. Ruth walked Louis Santop(Meanies) to start the inning. Frank Baker(Terrapins) and Vic Saier(Crimson Tide) were retired easily. With 2 outs Frank Duncan(Caterpillars) singled, and Pop Lloyd singled to right to drive in the 1st NL run of the game. That was it for Ruth. Slim Sallee(Pines) threw a WP on his very 1st pitch to Lee Magee(Terrapins) to allow Duncan to score the Tying run. Magee singled to extend the inning, but with runners on the corners, Tris Speaker(Caterpillars) flew out to end the inning.
Cristobal Torriente was hit by Jimmy Lavender(Blue Meanies) on a 1-2 pitch to start the 9th. A passed ball moved him to 2nd. 1 out later Dode Paskert(Rebels) reached on an infield single. Eddie Collins(Tornados) knocked down the hard shot, preventing the go ahead run to score. With runners on the corners, Ray Morgan(Miners) lined a pitch off the 3rd base bag, which bounced directly to Frank Baker, but he was unable to make a play, so Torriente was able to score on the infield hit.
In the bottom of the 9th Frank Baker walked to start the inning. Bill Drake(Miners) coaxed Vic Saier to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. PHer George Shively(Blue Meanies) grounded out to Wagner at short to end the game. AL-3 NL-2
MVP was a tough choice, but I went with Ray Morgan for his game winning rbi single in the 9th, plus I had never heard of him before, so why not?
