Christy Mathewson(Stogies) started for the AL and he had nothing. The 1st 5 batters he faced all reached base, with a Pop Lloyd(Blue Meanies) double and a Stuffy Mcinnis(Warbirds) single driving in the 1st 2 runs of the game. Luckily Sherry Magee(Skeeters) threw out Lloyd trying to score on McInnis' single to keep the scoring at 2-0.
With the score 3-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, starter Walter Johnson(Warbirds) was replaced by Ray Collins(Warbirds)and the AL proceeded to knock Collins around for 4 runs. Gavvy Cravath(Skeeters) hit a 2 run triple to tie the score, and an rbi groundout from Todd Allen(Gorillas) put the AL up 4-3.
A 2 run HR by Allen in the 7th(the 1st ever in the SCL All Star game) off Pete Alexander(Caterpillars) gave the AL a comfortable 6-3 lead heading into the 8th.
Bill Gatewood(Skeeters) gave up a lead off double to Vincente Rodriguez(Warbirds). He scored 2 outs later on a single by Jesse Barber(Superbas).
In the 9th Joe Tinker(Superbas) led off with a triple off Gatewood. 1 out later Chick Gandil(Wolverines) booted a groundball to 1st, allowing Tinker to score, making the score 6-5. One out later with lefty Tris Speaker(Caterpillars) up and the tieing run at 2nd, the book says to bring in the lefty Herb Pennock(Turks) to face Speaker. After looking at Pennock's real-life 5.13 ERA we felt it was too much of a risk to bring him in. With the computer handling in game strategy, we figured it would intentionally walk Speaker with the pitcher's spot due up next.
On the 1st pitch to Speaker,(I couldn't beleive the computer didn't IW Speaker) Buddy Petway(Miners) allowed a passed ball to put the tieing run just 90 feet away. The computer stayed away from the intentional walk again but wisely didn't give Speaker anything to hit walking him on 4 pitches. This brought up Hub Perdue(Tornados) the last pitcher left for the NL. He was pinch hit for with Hal Chase(Vinegars) the last NL player on the bench. An rbi single would have set up the possibilty of a position player pitching the last of the 9th for the NL. Not to worry however, as Chase took a called strike 3 to end the game.
