The 1st of hopefully many Second Chance League All Star games was played before a capacity crowd of National League rooters at the home of the Peoria Caterpillars, The Palace of The Fans.
Deadball Era ball was on display, as just 1 extra base hit was made, an rbi double off the bat of hometown favorite, Peoria catcher, Johnny Kling.
Starters Ed Walsh(Skeeters) and Russ Ford(Terrapins) each pitched shut out ball for 3 innings. In the 4th the AL loaded the bases with 2 outs, after Walter Johnson(Warbirds) allowed a bunt single to Nap Lajoie(Sunspots), and followed that up with walks to Sherry Magee(Skeeters) and Solly Hofman(Skeeters). Pinch hitter Josh Devore(Sunspots) smoked a line drive to right that was run down by Ty Cobb(Rascals) for the final out of the inning.
The National League scored the only 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 4th. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Joe Tinker(Warbirds) grounded to Hans Lobert(Pretzels) at 3rd, he threw to Lajoie for the force at 2nd, but Lajoie threw wide of 1st trying to complete the inning ending DP, for a 2 base error, allowing Clyde Milan(Caterpillars) to score. Johnny Kling followed with his rbi double.
The AL bats only threat was in the 4th inning. In no other inning did a batter reach 2nd base for the AL.
An MVP choice was a difficult one, but it seemed like the right choice should be Russ Ford of the Terrapins. 3 innings of 1 hit shutout ball set the pace for the rest of the game for the National league.
